Foods and Nutrition I

Course Overview

This course examines the nutritional needs of the individual. Emphasis is placed on the relationship of diet to health, kitchen and meal management, food preparation and sustainability for a global society, and time and resource management. English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include service learning and job shadowing. Apprenticeship and cooperative education are not available for this course. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.

Required Supplies:                                                  

1.5-2 in. 3 ring binder                                            

Notebook Paper/Pencil/Pen daily                                                   

Dividers                                                                  

1 highlighter                                                             

A clean hat or hair tie for lab days

Optional supplies: We can always use old magazines that you no longer need

 

Food:

***We may have a few open labs and food will be needed for these labs or alternative assignments will be given and will count as a lab grade***

Important notice:  If a student has below a 60 the week we have a Foods Lab, they will not be able to participate in the lab

 

Grading Policy:

35% Tests

25% Notebook (Organizational Skills)

20%Projects/Labs

20% Classwork/Quizzes

This class has a required final exam, which will account for 25% of the final grade

  • It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work when absent.  You will have 3 days to turn in all makeup work.  If it is a previously announced test you are responsible for taking the test the day you return.
  • Work needs to be turned in on time, any work/projects turned in after the due date will be 10 points off each day
  • Notebooks will be organized into sections and are an important part of your grade.  They will be graded every 3-4 weeks.

Grades will be posted each week in Power School. Interim reports will be given and will list each grade you receive in class.  Please review these grades.
