Getting to Know the New Curriculum

Following are resources designed to help parents and other stakeholders understand the curriculum and accountability changes for 2012.

Arkansas Common Core Video

Surry County (NC) Parent AwarenessThe Common Core State Standards are aligned with college and work expectations, focused and coherent, rigorous and authentic, internationally benchmarked, and based on evidence and research. The North Carolina Essential Standards have been written for the subject areas other than mathematics and English language arts.  They are narrower and deeper.   They are infused with writing, 21C content, thinking and learning skills and life skills throughout the content standards.  They are embedded with rigor, relevance, and relationships between and among subject areas, and developed for readiness. They are measurable and concise, integrated, and driven by the Revised Blooms Taxonomy.

National PTA Common Core State Standards Initiative: The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is an effort designed to improve educational outcomes for students by developing a set of common, voluntary, internationally-benchmarked academic standards in mathematics and English language arts.

NCDPI Accountability and Curriculum Reform Effort:  North Carolina's Accountability and Curriculum Reform Effort - also known as ACRE - is the state's comprehensive initiative to redefine the Standard Course of Study for K-12 students, the student assessment program and the school accountability model. In undertaking this ambitious work, North Carolina education leaders are the first in the nation to address learning standards, student assessments and school accountability simultaneously.

Ready for Parents:   Parents are critical to their children's success. Their involvement in their student's education – at school and at home – shows their support of the teacher(s), principal and school.  The READY initiative helps in this support:

Common Core and Essential Standards

North Carolina has adopted the Common Core State Standards in K-12 Mathematics and K-12 English Language Arts.  With the adoption of these state-led education standards, North Carolina embraces clear and consistent goals for learning to prepare children for success in college and work. The full Common Core standards can be viewed at www.corestandards.org  The curriculum for many other discipline areas has also been upgraded to match the rigor, complexity, and relevance of the common core.  The discipline areas include Science, Social Studies, Information and Technology, World Languages, Arts Education, Healthful Living, School Guidance Counseling, and Occupational Course of Study.
